What is Hijama and the benefits?

What Is Hijama

What is Hijama?

It has variable names such as wet cupping, blood letting, bekam darah, bekam basah etc…. The most common use internationally are wet cupping & Hijama.

Cupping (hijama) is the best remedy recommended and used by the Messenger. Our Messenger said, “Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371)]. He who also said that on the night of Israa (his ascension to the heavens) he did not pass by an angel except that it said to him, “Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama).” [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)]. This shows the importance and greatness of this Sunnah.

‘Hijama’ in arabic is derived from ‘hajm’ which means ‘sucking’. Cupping (hijama) is the process of applying cups to various points on the body by removing the air inside the cups to form a vacuum.

What is Hijama

Hijama ( Cupping) is of three types:

Dry cupping (hijama) Air cup- This is the process of using a vacuum on different points of the body in order to gather the blood in that area without cuts (light scratches using a sterile surgical blade or Lancing Pen). In Malay we called in bekam angin.

Dry massage cupping (hijama) – This is similar to dry cupping (hijama) but olive oil is applied to the skin (before applying the cups) in order to allow easy movement of the cups. In malay we called bekam luncur.
70% of diseases, pains and ailments are due to the blood being unable to reach certain parts of the body. Dry cupping (hijama) and dry massaging cupping (hijama) allow the blood to reach these places.

Fire Cupping – Fire cupping uses glass jars or bamboo cups that have an ignited material (I use cotton balls soaked in alcohol, held tightly by a set of hemostats) placed briefly inside them to create negative pressure. The flame is then quickly removed and the jar placed over specific areas of the body creating suction. This pressure moves the Blood, Qi and fluids of the area raising a petechial rash.

The Messenger r said, “For every disease there is a cure so if the medicine comes upon the disease it cures it by the will of Allah, the Most High.” [Saheeh Muslim (2204)].

Wet cupping (hijama) – This is the process of using a vacuum at different points on the body but with small cuts in order to remove ‘harmful’ blood or in lay man terms the “dirty” blood which lies just beneath the surface of the skin the epidermis. Some will use surgical blades, myself using lancet pen (It is always advised that wet cupping (hijama) is only administered by a trained cupping therapist).

What is Hijamah

Normal Cupping Therapy vs. Wet Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is the name of the actual procedure itself. A vacuum is created in a cup and placed on the body. This vacuum causes a negative pressure and pulls the muscles into the cup and therefore, draws the blood to the cupped area. This is known as “dry cupping”. Then you remove the cup in order to make small, shallow incisions in that same area, before putting the cup back on. This pulls out the toxic blood, acids and excess fluids from the body. This is known as “Wet Cupping or Blood Cupping.”

But what differentiates hijama is the religious and spiritual aspect of the practice. “Hijama” is the Islamic version of cupping therapy. Muslims practice hijama cupping therapy, in accordance with the way of the Prophet ﷺ. It means that the patient and hijama practitioner should have done their ablutions (wudu).

Hijama Returns The Body To A Normal State

Al-hijamah in Arabic literally means “to suck” and to “return to a normal state” of internal balance. It ultimately helps the body to create a balance, healthy alkaline environment by removing acidity. This fixes any problem that the body has, by bringing it to its normal state.

Hijama cupping therapy is a holistic, super powerful detox which removes toxic and stagnant blood from your body. It expels negative, unhealthy elements from the body, and allows it to replenish itself.

Benefits of Hijama (Wet Cupping Therapy)

Cupping is an excellent form of preventative and curative therapy. Below are some of the ways cupping helps:

Boosts the circulatory and immune systems
Cleanses and detoxifies the body
Treats illness and relaxes the patient
Pain relief
Hijama is also useful for treating many muscular, skeletal, neurological, immune, cardio-vascular, respiratory, digestive and urinary issues.

Hijama has stimulating effects so it successfully treats the following conditions:

  • Common Cold and Flu
  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Skin problems
  • Injuries
  • Asthma
  • Cellulite
  • Fatigue
  • Anemia
  • Depression
  • Emotional problems
  • Atrophy
  • Sciatica
  • Constipation and Diarrhea
  • Period pain
  • Weight loss and much more.

Although Hijama is a very simple procedure, it has super dramatic effects. Our health and well-being are tied up with the immune system and are totally dependent on the flow of blood and Qi (energy) and body fluids like hormones and lymphatic fluid. Traditional medicine tells us that all pain is due to stagnation of these symptoms.
